We’re delighted to be sponsoring a Global Game Jam, a two-day event hosted by Digital Greenhouse Guernsey, for budding game designers under 18.

The Game Jam itself is only for over 18s, so the Global Game Jam team has launched the Global Game Jam Next (GGJN), which is open to students aged between 12 and 18.

Lucy Kirby, Head of Digital at Digital Greenhouse Guernsey, said: “The goal of the GGJN is to develop students’ skills and to promote an interest in STEAM subjects (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).

“The event is open to students of all abilities and backgrounds – it doesn’t matter if you’ve never created a game before, all levels are welcome.”

Students will split into teams and each team will develop a game based on the theme given during the session. This can then be interpreted by the teams in whatever way they like.

Lucy added: “The weekend is about exploring the process of development; be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression.”

Our Chief Information Officer, John Davison, said: “We’re really pleased to be sponsoring the Guernsey Game Jam event. We’re always looking for ways to encourage young people to participate in innovative sessions like this, so it’s great to see Game Jam creating something that engages younger students.

“There’s a lot of creative talent on the island and I’m really looking forward to seeing what designs and ideas the teams develop.”

The Global Game Jam is the world's largest game creation event. In January 2018, events took place in 803 locations in 108 countries, with 8,606 games being created in one weekend.

Global Game Jam Next will run across two days, starting on Friday 14th June from 1pm - 9pm, with food being provided, and picking up again on Saturday 15th June from 10am - 4pm.

Prizes will be awarded to the team with the most innovative design and the most polished or best-looking game.

Sign up here for the Global Game Jam Next on 14th-15th June.
