With the advances in AI, perhaps the real Robot Olympics are not too far off in our digital future, but to mark Women in Technology Day, 16 students from Ladies’ College and St Sampson’s High School teamed up to hold an Olympic-style event with EV3 Lego robots.
The programme, which we co-constructed with Digital Greenhouse Guernsey, saw four teams of Year Nine students compete to code their robots to complete three different sporting events; lacrosse, shot put, dressage, and for the grand finale – a synchronised dance.
The aim of the session was to develop the student’s creative problem solving, engineering and coding skills. The winning team was from St Sampson’s High School, but all the team’s robots who competed managed to throw some excellent shapes on the digital dance floor.
Digital Greenhouse held the event as part of the Digital Innovators Programme, which we devised with them as a way of developing opportunities for young people to engage with digital technologies.
Lucy Kirby, Head of Digital at the Digital Greenhouse, said: “The Digital Innovators Programme has shown that there is a really high level of innovation and digital creativity on the island. It’s great to be able to work with companies like First Central to help young people build and develop these essential critical thinking, problem solving and collaborative skills for their futures.”
Lisa Le Huray, our Quality Assurance Analyst, was also on hand to offer her technical expertise. She said: “I would have loved the opportunity to attend an event like this when I was a student. I always knew I wanted to work in technology, so this would have been a great initiative to take part in.
“It’s inspiring to see that there are lots of bright young women who are interested in a digital career. It was incredible to see how quickly they all picked up coding the robots and I hope some of them decide on an exciting career in technology!”
