Last week a number of our people volunteered to spend the day at Sussex Cricket’s ninth #DIScoverABILITY Day, to help run cricket coaching sessions for the disabled community of Sussex.
More than 400 participants attended the event, from 28 different organisations, including schools, colleges, day centres and community organisations. And they were supported by a team of 50 enthusiastic volunteers.
As our motor insurance broker, 1ST CENTRAL, is ground sponsor, we were delighted to be involved in such a rewarding day and the weather was perfect for the event.
Sussex Cricket’s mascot, Sid the Shark was on hand to provide encouragement, as was current Sussex squad members Delray Rawlins, Tom Haines, Stuart Whittingham and Laurie Evans, as well as recently retired Lewis Hatchett.
It was a fulfilling day, with lots of activities for participants to get involved in and have fun, and there was lots of really positive feedback.
Eleanor Moquet, one of our volunteers, commented: “It was a really enjoyable day to be involved in. It’s rare that you find yourself at a company that will allow you to volunteer at events like this where you’re able to see the immediate benefit it has on those it’s targeted towards. You really feel like you’re making a difference by just helping the participants, offering encouragement and celebrating their success. It was a brilliant day, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to be a part of it.”
